Description:

ACC President Athena Poppas, MD, FACC, talks about how her hospital system, in Providence, Rhode Island, is part of statewide planning efforts with the Department of Health and included a coordinated approach for proceduralists, surgeons, and all hospital systems with the idea they would all do this simultaneously to re-open and begin semi-elective procedures. She believes this coordinated approach is important because they have the ability to test all patients pre-op and helps ensure adequate beds, ICU capacity, PPE, and personnel. Another important piece is incorporating shared decision-making and making sure good conversations are occurring so patients understand they can come back safely and making an assessment of risk to the patient versus treatment today or delaying treatment.
